What is ZeroTier?

ZeroTier creates a virtual private network that connects devices across different physical networks as if they were on the same local network. For a SOLO installed at a remote observatory, this means you can access it directly from your home computer using the same local-style address — no port forwarding, no VPN server to maintain, no firewall rules to negotiate.

The setup is free for small personal networks (up to 25 devices) and runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, and the SOLO's Raspberry Pi-based system.

Why use it with the SOLO?

The SOLO's web interface, data files, and ASCOM drivers are designed for local network access. When the SOLO is at a remote site, getting to these resources typically requires either opening firewall ports (a security risk) or using a VPN (complex to configure). ZeroTier provides a middle ground: encrypted, peer-to-peer connectivity with minimal configuration on both ends.

What the tutorial covers

  • Creating a ZeroTier account and network
  • Installing ZeroTier on your Windows or Mac computer
  • Installing ZeroTier on the SOLO (via SSH)
  • Authorising both devices on the virtual network
  • Accessing the SOLO web interface and data from your home computer as if it were local

Time required: Approximately 30 minutes for the full setup, assuming you already have SSH access to your SOLO and a basic familiarity with network concepts.
